Palau Koror — Presidential candidate Tommy Remengesau Jr. faced a barrage of tough questions about the country’s future during a spirited town hall meeting organized by young citizens of Palau. The first of its kind, the event, which was not affiliated with any political group, drew a large crowd of young people eager to engage directly with one of Palau’s leading politicians.
Education Reform: A New Approach for the Next Generation
Remengesau presented his vision for reforming Palau’s education system, stressing the need to modernize it to make it more responsive to the needs of students and educators. He suggested revising the school calendar to introduce summer breaks to give teachers time for professional development and reduce burnout. Remengesau also stressed the importance of integrating technology into the classroom, using innovative tools such as educational cartoons to make learning more engaging and efficient.
Supporting Veterans: Ensuring a Better Future
Speaking about concerns about veterans’ well-being, Remengesau highlighted Palau’s large military community and the need to improve support systems. He proposed the creation of a dedicated commission to deal with veterans’ affairs to ensure that veterans’ needs are prioritized during negotiations with the United States under the Compact of Free Association. His plans include expanding job placement programs to help veterans transition smoothly into civilian jobs and contribute to the nation’s workforce.
Fighting the drug problem: Protecting Palau’s youth
A major concern among participants was the growing availability of drugs, especially methamphetamine, among Palau’s youth. Remengesau called for a change in leadership at the Public Security Bureau and suggested the re-establishment of a dedicated anti-drug unit. He also urged immediate action to prevent the spread of fentanyl from nearby areas and stressed the need to thoroughly investigate potential local drug production.
Looking ahead: continuing the conversation
The town hall meeting marks the first in a series of youth-led discussions by Palau’s presidential candidates. Fellow presidential candidate Surangel Whipps Jr. also plans to participate in similar forums to ensure young voices dominate this election season. As the election approaches, these conversations highlight the growing influence of Palau’s younger generation in shaping the country’s future.
