Descending to Zermatt from 2027?

The downhill race on the “Gran Becca” track has been removed from the calendar for next season, despite the signing of a five-year contract by organizing committee president Franz Julen and FIS president Johan Eliasch.

But things seem to be moving in the other direction. If the descent through two countries (starting in Switzerland and ending in Italy) is abandoned, it is likely that a descent will be set up on the Swiss side, which was one of the classics until 1967: the Gornergrat descent.
At 6 kilometres long, the track was the longest at the time. Vaudois Jean-Daniel Dätwyler set the record 57 years ago in 6 minutes and 10 seconds.
Late March or early April?
For some time, Olympic champion Bernhard Russi, later a slope architect, had been studying the possibility of making the descent in the upper two thirds of the initial descent. The route would be 3,000 meters shorter than in the 1960s, and the finish line would be at Shweigmatten-Furi, after the spectacular jump through the Gornergrat train tunnel.
Franz Julen confirmed to his colleagues in Blick that “the FIS has kept its word” and has “made a written proposal for future World Cup races in Zermatt”. “We will analyse it together with our partners and Swiss-Ski,” Julen continued. We should be able to have a clear position in September.”
Since the hotels in Zermatt are usually fully booked from December to March and the November dates chosen last year were clearly not suitable from a climatic point of view, the descent from Zermatt will probably take place at the end of March or in the first week of April.
