Many people attended the official opening ceremony of the new court building
On the morning of Wednesday, August 7, 2024, leaders of the three governments of American Samoa and many leaders of the country gathered to witness the official opening of the new Supreme Court building of the territory.
The meeting was attended by the Honourable Governor Lemanu P.S. Mauga, Honourable Senate President Tuolo Manaya Fruan, Honourable Speaker Savali Tallawo Alay and honourable Senators and Members of Parliament.
Also present were Justice Mamiya Sala, judicial family dignitaries, lawyers and court staff.
American Samoa Congressional Representative Uifatali Aumua Amata Radewagen and government officials also attended the meeting.
The Honourable Governor in his special address said, “…perhaps these are the aspirations of our successive governments. The aspirations that can be heard are the plans prepared by the Governor and his government.”
“But thank God, today that wish has come true,” Mr Lemanu said.
He also said, “This is the court, Lolo wrote the painting, nothing has changed in the painting, there is a spirit behind the people who prepared this event.”
He also expressed his gratitude to Nana’s Inc. for their thorough work and that it had been determined that there was no need to look for outside workers. His Excellency the Governor expressed his happiness with the work done by the staff.
The director of the Department of Public Works (DPW), Faleosina Voigt, announced the history of the project, which was launched on January 3, 2022. The new building will replace the existing courthouse, which is more than 50 years old.
Marius Richard Alexander Young (J.)
On August 3, 2024, Mr. Richard Alexander Young Jr., a businessman and son from American Samoa, died at an Ohio hospital at the age of 77.
Mr. Young was born in Pago Pago to Richard Young Sr. and Pauline Bartley Young of the village of Nu’uuli.
For more than 30 years, Young has managed the company that delivers propane gas to American Samoa. There is also a man known in the territory as ‘Dickie’.
Afisio seeks to suspend claims against government
A third claim brought by Mr. Leauma Ben Alefosio against the Government of American Samoa is now before the Federal District Court in Honolulu.
But the lawsuit has been added to the H-EEOC committee (Hawaii Equal Employment Opportunity Commission).
Mr. Alefusio’s claim stems from his belief that his 2021 dismissal from the Public Defender’s Office was unfair and unjust.
The first two claims were dismissed by the Honolulu District Court.
