The Zambia Police Service has confirmed the circulation of a disturbing video on social media that captures the attack that took place on August 2, 2024 in the Kissasa area of the Karumbila District.
The video showed the beating of 21-year-old Ms. Kawe Mwanath, a resident of Kissasa originally from Mukanda village in Isindi Chiefdom in Zambezi Region. According to the police report, Ms. Mwanath was beaten by Ms. Anne Phiri, also from Kissasa, over allegations that Ms. Mwanath was having an extramarital affair with Ms. Phiri’s husband.
The attack took place at around 17:00 on August 2, leaving Ms. Mwanaute with multiple bruises on her back, buttocks and abdomen, as well as pain all over her body. It was reported that before the attack, Ms. Phiri had a conflict with Ms. Mwanaute at the local market, forcibly took her back to her residence, and beat her with slaps and kicks. The attack was eventually stopped after the intervention of a neighbor.
Following the incident, the Kalumbila Police Station opened an investigation and arrested Ms. Anne Phiri on August 6, 2024. She has been formally charged with assault occasioning bodily harm (OABH).
The Zambia Police Service has expressed serious concern over the circulation of videos of the attacks which have been widely circulated on major social media platforms in recent days and emphasises that sharing such content may lead to further victimisation of the victims and may have legal consequences.
“We urge the public not to share this content,” said Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga. “The Zambia Police Service is committed to ensuring that justice is served and will investigate the source of these viral videos. Anyone found involved in the illegal dissemination of the videos will face legal action.”
Police would like to assure the public that they take this matter seriously and are determined to uphold the law in this case. We will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
