phosphorusPotential Tropical Cyclone 5 has developed into Tropical Storm Ernesto, but Barbados
The Bureau of Meteorology (BMS) said the cyclone posed no direct threat to the island.
In its final statement on the system, the Barbados Meteorological Service said Ernesto is forecast to pass over northern Barbados tonight, August 12, into the early hours of tomorrow morning (Tuesday, August 13).
During this period, there will be occasional heavy to intense showers with rainfall amounts of up to 2 inches possible, with locally higher amounts possible and flash flooding possible in some areas. Showers may be accompanied by occasional gusty winds and, as a result, seas are expected to become quite rough, especially on the south and west coasts of Barbados with wave heights between 1.5 and 2.5 metres.
At 5 p.m. Monday, Ernesto was located near latitude 16.0 degrees north, longitude 57.5 degrees west, 387 kilometers northeast of Barbados. The system was moving toward the west-northwest at 28 mph (44 kph) with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph) and a minimum central pressure of 1009 millibars.
On its current track, the system is expected to move through the Leeward Islands tonight into tomorrow.
