The Cayman Islands national team made headlines this Friday when it confirmed it would not appear in Cuba for its second CONCACAF group stage match.
Players from the Cayman Islands, mostly students living in the United States on school permits, risk losing that status if they enter Cuban territory.

“We have a lot of players who are studying at different universities in the United States. The political situation that the US government has taken is that anyone who enters Cuba will have their visa revoked.” Witherker explained.
“We tried to get help from the US State Department to get a letter that would allow us to play and our visas would not be affected, but it was impossible. The players became very frustrated. “Uncomfortable, as were his parents. We met as an executive committee and decided to play,” He added.
“This is not about sporting issues at all, this is about political issues that directly affect us. The Cayman Islands has never failed to participate in any championship in any age group and we always participate.”
“We tried to contact Cuba to see if we could play somewhere else and the Cayman Islands would cover the costs, but the president disagreed for good reasons and we were unable to come to an agreement and we had to make the decision that would hurt us the most and that was not to play in Cuba,” He concluded.
On the first day, the Cayman Islands had a free date and Cuba lost to Honduras.
Who is Alfredo Whitaker?
Alfredo Whitaker, a Guapiles native, has a very special history in football. He was a goalkeeper, then an international referee and now serves as president of the Cayman Islands Football Federation.
In Costa Rica he played with Saprissa, Limon, Perez Zeledon and Uruguayan Coronado, while in Honduras he played with Victoria and Vida.
