Opposition DPP electoral conference chairman Dr George Chaponda said more than 2,600 delegates from across the country are expected to gather at COMESA Hall in Blantyre for the electoral conference scheduled for the 18th.day August.
Chaponda said all posts will be contested during the conference, which shows the party’s commitment to equal sharing of all posts.
However, the party chairman, Peter Mutharika, will not be nominated by his opponents as he is the only one to have been issued with presidential nomination papers.
“Other political parties stand for positions that are shared by people from the same region or the same tribe, but our party is different and we will prove that we are different,” Chaponda said.
At the same event, DPP spokesperson, MP Shadreck Namalomba, stressed that the DPP is unique in its commitment to regional inclusivity in its leadership structure. According to Namalomba, the DPP ensures equal representation of all regions of the country by allocating key positions by region within the Central Executive Committee and the National Management Committee.
Namalumba also decried the lack of regional balance in other political parties. He criticised the fact that the leadership of these parties mainly came from one region, district or religious group. His remarks came after a conference held in Lilongwe last weekend, where he highlighted that 90% of the newly elected leadership members of some political parties were from the Central Region.
He believes this highlights disturbing trends towards tribal and regional exclusivity in other political organisations.
