An accident at a popular tourist attraction in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Saturday (August 10) left one tourist dead and dozens injured.
The incident was caused by a malfunction of the “magic carpet”, which is used to take tourists up the mountain to enjoy the beauty of Detian Waterfall.
Detian Waterfall is a large transnational waterfall on the border between China and Vietnam.
The ride, which resembles a human conveyor belt and helps visitors ascend the steep mountain more quickly, requires visitors to sit in a seat that is enclosed on both sides by a transparent panel.
According to a statement released on the attraction’s Weibo account, an “equipment failure” caused the death of a tourist.
A total of 60 people were injured, including 1 seriously injured and 59 slightly injured.
While the statement did not elaborate on the nature of the accident, one Xiaohongshu user said passengers were thrown backwards and collided with each other.
“A lot of people had broken bones and there was blood everywhere,” user “jojo” wrote on the social media platform.
