Portugal’s University of Coimbra (UC) and Macau Polytechnic University (UPM) have launched a dual doctorate programme in information technology, the presidents of the two universities said yesterday during a visit to Macau.
Amílcar Falcão said that the doctorate was born this academic year, following an agreement signed in August, and “begins to show its first results”, with 18 students, “divided between Portuguese and Chinese”.
The official stressed that UC hopes to “continue to have this capacity to mobilize” students from both sides “in the future,” as the institution hopes to “increase the amount of advanced training” in collaboration with Macau.
Falcão said the UC will “take a step forward” in the next academic year 2024/2025, by collaborating with the City University of Macau to launch an advanced studies program in international economic relations in English.[A visita a Macau serviu para] to consolidate our existing partnerships and to consider other open partnerships that we are negotiating,” the rector said, citing the example of the aging sector.
In October, UC established a joint laboratory with the University of Macau (UM) to study cognitive aging and address the needs created by increased life expectancy.
Also yesterday, Amílcar Falcão visited the UC facilities located in the neighboring Hengqin (mountain island). “We brought some materials to study and in the near future we will present a project to the authorities so that we can get the necessary support,” the UC president said, without giving further details.
Falcão revealed that the UC also hopes to strengthen its partnership with UPM in the field of artificial BroadCast Unitedligence, linked to the joint Advanced Technology Laboratory for Smart Cities created by the two institutions in 2022.
Long-term relationship
Today, UPM will award an “honorary” doctorate to the president of the University of California at the graduation ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic year. Falcao said he believed this was recognition of the long-standing relationship with China, including the establishment of a Confucius Institute delegation in 2016 to promote the teaching of Mandarin and Chinese culture overseas.
Before visiting Macau, Xi visited Shanghai in eastern mainland China and Shenzhen, adjacent to Hong Kong, to “consolidate relations that have existed for many years” and to provide a “strategic country” for the University of Coimbra.
In May 2019, the University of California and Shanghai’s Fudan University signed an agreement to allow students from Chinese institutions to attend intensive Portuguese language courses in Coimbra during the summer.
A month ago, the University of California officially established the Center for Chinese and Portuguese-speaking Countries Studies with Beijing Foreign Studies University. The Portuguese university established the Sino-Portuguese Institute and the Center for Chinese Studies in 2018 in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
