August 11, 2024 (El Fasher) – The acting governor of North Darfur State on Sunday accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of killing 28 civilians during an attack on the city of El Fasher the previous day.

Heavy fighting broke out in El Fasher on Saturday between the Sudanese army, allied armed groups and the Rapid Security Forces, with paramilitary forces briefly entering the city.

Activists accuse the Rapid Security Forces of executing civilians in their homes, some on the basis of their ethnicity.

“RSF bullets killed 28 civilians and injured 46 others,” Governor Al-Hafiz Bakhit said after visiting the wounded in hospital. He accused the RSF of committing massacres and deliberately targeting civilians.

The military said it had repelled the attack and inflicted heavy losses on the Rapid Security Forces.

“The army is capable of defending the motherland,” Bakhit said. “Fasher will remain resilient and will soon be rid of any insurgents or traitors.”

Separately, the North Darfur state health ministry said Rapid Support Forces shelled a hospital late Sunday, killing one person and injuring dozens.

El Fasher has been under siege since April by the Rapid Security Forces, a paramilitary group that has made several unsuccessful attempts to capture the city.
