Higher profits

Kajalainen said cleaners are paid more than care workers.

“When I owned a cleaning company and priced my cleaners’ invoice prices and wages, the margins were higher than they are now when I lease a home care provider, where competition is so fierce,” Kajalainen said.

According to him, the premium for a home nurse is generally around five euros.

“The profit for a cleaner is close to ten dollars an hour,” Karjalainen said.

12.5–13 EUR

Karjalainen said he pays temporary cleaners between 12.50 and 13 euros per hour.

According to the latest statistics from Statistics Finland, the median hourly wage for cleaners in homes, hotels and offices during normal working hours is €11.97.

“Hotel employees have been transferred to us because of the salary,” Karjalainen said.

“The other thing is that there is no shortage of cleaners. I currently have 60 job applications for cleaners,” Karjalainen said.

There is even oversupply

According to the latest Labour Force Barometer, there is an oversupply of office and institutional cleaners in Singapore and Malaysia. In April 2024, there were 374 job vacancies and 1,962 unemployed people.

Meanwhile, there is a shortage of office and institutional cleaners in Lapland. There are 300 vacancies and 141 people are unemployed.

There is a labor shortage in most parts of the country. It refers to a situation where vacant positions and labor cannot fill them for some reason. For example, the difficulties encountered may be related to the skills required for the job or the regional location of the labor force and the job.

Language skills play a role

Karelian also has language skill requirements.

Care workers need to have better Finnish language skills than cleaners.
