South Florida event organizer receives Jamaican Consulate General’s “One Love One Award”

On Saturday, August 3, the Consul General of Jamaica in South Florida, Oliver Mair, attended the STUDIO 45 | Jamaica’s 62nd Independence Celebration held at the Truck Stop in Weston, Florida.

The event attracted hundreds of revelers and Consul General Meier took the opportunity to interact with the crowd before taking to the stage to celebrate the success of the event. He congratulated promoters Gary Hart and Omar Shukair for organizing a memorable celebration of Jamaica’s independence.

During the celebration, Consul General Meier presented two prominent South Florida promoters, Marco Brown and Tyrone Robertson, with the prestigious “Jamaica Consulate General One Love Award.” The award recognizes their significant contributions to the Jamaican diaspora through events that celebrate and preserve Jamaican culture.

Entertainment industry pioneer Marco Brown made history in the 1970s when he opened the first Jamaican Nightclub in Broward County. He is known for hosting iconic events such as Sundays on the Bay and Rancho Grande. Looking back on his long career, Brown expressed his gratitude, saying, “I’ve been in the entertainment industry for a long time, and it still brings me satisfaction when I see patrons having a good time at the events I host.”

Tyrone Robertson began his career organizing small events in Kingston, Jamaica and Miami Lakes, Florida, drawing inspiration from successful ventures such as clubs like Sundays on the Bay and Hungry Whale. His efforts culminated in the creation of the popular monthly Florida First Friday event, which served the community from 2000 to 2016. Robertson is also the co-producer of the Caribbean Jerk Festival in Atlanta, and co-founder of CaribTix.com and Caribbean streaming service Caribcast. “Seeing the success of clubs like Sundays on the Bay and Hungry Whale helped lay the foundation for me to create events and platforms that cater to the Caribbean community,” he noted.

Brown and Robertson have also collaborated on several events, including SeaBreeze Sundays and the annual Pluto & Friends concert. Their work has played an important role in keeping Caribbean culture and entertainment alive overseas.
