A reader suggested Nintendo Remastered GameCube games Zelda: The Wind Waker and adds a new dungeon to address some of the flaws of the original.
Most things about Nintendo are a mystery, but the biggest mystery right now is when they’ll announce Switch 2 And what they’ll do between now and release. They’ve announced almost nothing at this point, but have promised a Nintendo Direct sometime this month. I’m guessing it’ll just be a collection of smaller games and remasters, but this is Nintendo, so who knows… Games like Metroid Prime 4 are definitely still in the works.
One thing that has been brought up a few times is that it will be years before we see a new mainline Zelda game, so Nintendo will want to fill the gap with spin-offs, remasters, and remakes. Which remake makes the most sense?since The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening was the last remake, many fans suggested playing other Game Boy Color and top-down games.
I’d love any Zelda remake, but my recommendation is The Wind Waker. It already has a remake, and Nintendo has so far resisted the temptation to re-release it on Switch, but a remake can do something that no other Zelda game can: it can improve it.
The Wind Waker is a great game, but as many fans know, a lot of content was cut from the final version, and everything feels incredibly overlong in the final third. There doesn’t seem to be a dungeon missing, and all you get is endless Triforce quests, which emphasizes how voyages can actually be a bit boring.
It’s a shame, because if it weren’t for these issues, I think this would be the best of all Zelda games, at least from the original mode. The dungeon design is definitely the best, the graphics are great (the remake doesn’t need to change much), and it has a lot of great characters… and Tingle.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Nintendo talk in detail about what they removed, because it seems to me like they don’t want to admit it, but something must have happened during the GameCube era, because Super Mario Sunshine had similar issues. The difference is that I don’t think you could make it the best Mario game.
Since it’s unclear what exactly happened, I’m not sure if this dungeon was ever designed. My guess is that it wasn’t created, but there were definitely design sketches, and maybe even plans and layouts.
But if it’s not, then just make a new one from scratch. Nintendo would be wise to keep practicing dungeon design, as it has been scaled back in modern games – especially as I think this is still the weakest aspect of Kingdom of Tears.
As far as sailing goes, I have to do more than just point the direction and sail in a straight line. Sailing looks great, but it’s harder and requires some skill than just figuring out which way the wind is blowing.
For new content, I would scale back the Triforce section, as I don’t think there’s a way to make it interesting and it’s clearly just filler. If there was a new dungeon, I think that would work, but there would also probably be missing content that could be added, or even stuff they wanted to do but never got around to.
Remasters don’t usually go this way, and I tried to stop myself from thinking about the Star Wars Special Editions when I suggested this, but I really think it’s a great idea that would help elevate a great game into a full-fledged classic. Will Nintendo do this? Probably not, but that’s my thought anyway.
