The Paris Olympic Games (OI) held a grand closing ceremony at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on Sunday, August 11, attended by more than 70,000 people.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo handed over the Olympic flag in a ceremony that lasted about three hours to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who officially handed over the organizing of the Olympic Games to the American city, which will host the 2028 Games.

During the performances in Saint-Denis, among others, the American actor Tom Cruise took part, who in a pre-recorded video clip “brought” the Olympic flag to California. It all started with the athletes entering the stadium waving the flags of the 205 countries and territories of the participants, while screens throughout the stadium read “United, united for peace”.

After this, the last OI medal was awarded in the women’s marathon.

IOC President Thomas Bach awarded the gold medal to Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, Tigste Assefa of Ethiopia won the silver medal and Hellen Obiri of Kenya won the gold medal. This was another detail that deviated from Olympic tradition, as the closing ceremony usually awards medals to the men’s marathon medalists.

As the Associated Press writes, it may be impossible for next host Los Angeles to surpass Paris.

The French capital made full use of its urban landscape when hosting its first Olympic Games in a hundred years.

The Eiffel Tower and other famous monuments have become Olympic stars in their own right, serving as backdrops and even venues for certain sports.

In a little over two weeks, starting on August 28, Paris will once again host athletes from all over the world when the Paralympic Games begin.
