On the evening of August 11, Ukrainian President Zelensky released a video of a fire at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, which was occupied by Russian troops. Russia has confirmed that a fire has occurred.
“Energy is up. We recorded from Nikopol that the Russian occupiers set fire on the territory of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. So far, radiation levels are normal,” the Ukrainian president wrote.
“We are waiting for the world’s reaction, we are waiting for the IAEA’s reaction. Russia must be held accountable. Only Ukraine’s control over the Zaporizhia nuclear station can guarantee a return to normalcy and complete safety,” said Vladimir Zelensky.
The head of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhia region of Ukraine, Balitsky, said the fire was caused by the Ukrainian armed forces’ shelling of the city of Engodar. He claimed the fire was in a cooling tower, an integral part of the cooling system of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. He did not specify what might be burning there.
A representative of the Russian government assured that all generating units of the nuclear power plant will be shut down as before.
Currently, all six units of the station are in cold shutdown, and there is no threat of a steam explosion or other consequences. The radiation background around the nuclear power plant and the city of Energodar is normal. Employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations are working at the fire site, and the fire is being extinguished. “Yevgeny Balitsky wrote.
“Please remain calm, there is no threat. We are controlling the situation together with the station management,” the Russian-appointed official added.
But Yevgeny Yevtushenko, head of the Nikopol region’s military administration, claimed that “according to unofficial information obtained from sources on the other side, the Russians set fire to a large number of car tires in the cooling tower.”
