Renowned musicians Oscar winners Antonio Sanchez and Michael League, both multiple Grammy Award winners, are coming to the Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival, organizers have announced. Antonio Sanchez, who performed with Oliver Dragojević at New York’s famous Carnegie Hall in 2008, and Michael League, leader of the band Snarky Puppy, will perform at this year’s Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival, along with the festival’s artistic director and co-founder, Thana Alexa.
200 schools
The festival’s press department noted that Sánchez is a four-time Grammy Award winner and one of the most respected drummers in the jazz world. They said he brings incredible technique and innovative musical expression to Lopud. His career peaked in 2014 when he composed the music for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film Birdman, which won four Oscars, including Best Picture, and Sánchez was nominated for a Grammy and a Golden Globe for Best Original Score. His career was further enriched by the music he composed for the HBO documentary series Anarchist. He has created more than a dozen albums as a band leader or solo artist.
The famous musician has already performed several times in Croatia. The first time was in Dubrovnik in 1997 with the United Nations Orchestra. They remind that he performed with Thane Alex’s band in Zagreb and at the 2015 Summer Olympics in Dubrovnik. As stated in the organizer’s press release, the educational philosophy of the Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival fits perfectly with that of Michael League. In addition to his artistic career, Michael League is passionate about music education and has given masterclasses in more than 200 schools around the world. League, a five-time Grammy Award winner and founder of the famous bands Snarky Puppy and Bokante, launched the GroundUp Festival in 2017 as a performance platform for outstanding musicians.
Free Transportation
Sanchez and League, as well as Lopud singer Thana Alexa, performed as the band Bad Hombre. According to the organizers, the second Punta Lopud Jazz Festival will be held from August 29 to 31 and will feature performances by more than 10 talented musicians who will redefine contemporary jazz through creative collaborations. In a press release, they stated that the festival offers a unique opportunity to enjoy top jazz music on one of Croatia’s most beautiful islands. They stressed that under the famous Lopud palm trees, visitors will be able to experience the renaissance of jazz through top performances by internationally renowned musicians. They announced that the concerts are free for all visitors and that free boat rides from Dubrovnik to Lopud and back will be provided to the audience.
