BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday (Aug 11) in a phone call with Iran’s acting foreign minister that China supports Iran in defending its “sovereignty, security and national dignity”, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement.
Wang Yi reiterated Beijing’s Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh assassinated in Tehran on July 31, said the attack violated Iran’s sovereignty and threatened regional stability.
Iran and the Palestinian militant group Hamas have accused Israel of carrying out the attack that killed Haniyeh.
Israel has not claimed or denied responsibility for the killing, which has raised questions about whether the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip is over. Evolved into a wider Middle East war.

China’s Foreign Ministry said Wang told Iran’s acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani that Haniyeh’s killing “directly undermined the Gaza ceasefire negotiation process and damaged regional peace and stability.”
Wang Yi expressed that China supports Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty, security and national dignity in accordance with the law, supports Iran’s efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, and is willing to maintain close communication with Iran.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday nominated Abbas Araghchi, who served as Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator from 2013 to 2021, as the country’s foreign minister.
