Paris, France – Jamaica was hit by a series of unfortunate events on the final day of the 2024 Paris Olympics, dashing the country’s hopes of increasing its medal count.
Although Jamaica had three chances to win more medals, it ended up with just six medals – one gold, three silvers and two bronzes.
The day began with Roman Beckford competing in his first Olympic high jump final. The 22-year-old put in a strong performance, clearing 2.17m on his first attempt and 2.22m on his second. However, he struggled at 2.27m, failing all three attempts and ultimately finishing tenth in a hotly contested event. The gold medal was decided in a tight play-off, with Hamish Kerr of New Zealand breaking the regional record with a jump of 2.36m, beating Shelby McEwen of the United States, who also set a personal best of 2.36m. Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim, a legend in the sport, finished third with a season’s best of 2.34m.
The women’s 100m hurdles final was another disappointment for Jamaica. Akela Nugent came out of the starting line at a blistering pace, but lost her footing early in the race after her back leg hit the first hurdle. The slip threw her off balance, causing her to crash into several more hurdles and eventually be forced to retire. Nugent’s early exit threw the competitors off balance, with American Marseille Russell taking the title in 12.33 seconds, narrowly ahead of France’s Sirena Samba-Majella (12.34) and defending champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico (12.36).
Heartbreaking moments
The most heartbreaking moment of the day came in the women’s 4x400m relay. Jamaica was in a strong position, with Andrenet Knight running second and holding second place at the 150m bend. However, as fate would have it, Ireland’s Lacidat Adeleke accidentally knocked the baton out of Knight’s hands as she passed her. The baton drop crushed Jamaica’s hopes of a podium finish and forced the team to withdraw from the race. In the end, the United States won the championship in a stunning 3:15.27, a regional record. The Netherlands (3:19.50) and Great Britain (3:19.72) came in second and third, respectively, both setting national records.
