It is known that a landslide occurred at a large garbage dump in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, has killed at least 12 people.

The landslides occurred after weeks of heavy rains and rescue workers are continuing to dig through the rubble in the hope of finding more survivors.

The 36-acre (14-hectare) Kiteezi landfill is the only landfill serving the entire city of Kampala, which has approximately 4 million residents.

Kampala Mayor Elias Lukwago said it was “a disaster waiting to happen”.

The city government has reportedly been trying to find a new site for years.

According to Reuters, a huge hill formed by accumulated garbage collapsed late on Friday night, burying homes on the edge of the garbage dump as residents slept.

The death toll announced on Saturday was eight, including two children.

Kampala police spokesman Patrick Onyango told AFP on Sunday that four more bodies had been found and 14 people had been rescued.

“The rescue operation is still ongoing until we are sure that no one is trapped,” he said.

Onyango said about 1,000 people had been forced from their homes by the landslide. He did not say how many people lived at the site or whether they lived nearby.

Many people make a living by scavenging through garbage dumps for anything they can resell.

The Uganda Red Cross has been providing tents to people in need of temporary shelter.
