Last Olympic Day: Sifan Hassan excels in marathon, track cyclist Lavresen aims for three golds

It’s the last day of the Paris Olympics and the Netherlands still has medals up for grabs. What’s on the programme?

The Netherlands excels in marathon and track cycling
At 8 a.m., Sifan Hassan will start her Olympic marathon debut. She has already won bronze medals in the 5km and 10km events at these Games. Sports fanatics are eagerly awaiting this race, as Hassan has set herself the goal of becoming the first woman to win medals in three running events. Anne Luijten of the Netherlands is also participating in the marathon.

Track cyclists Harrie Lavreysen and Jeffrey Hoogland will also compete again in the keirin, an event where riders use a pace motor to accelerate to the finish line. Lavreysen has already won gold medals in the team sprint and the individual sprint. He also hopes to see himself win three gold medals at this Olympics. Lavreysen and Hoogland’s quarterfinals started with 11.29.

The women will compete in the semifinals of the track cycling sprint and may even make the final. Maike van Duin competes in the omnium, a combined event that includes sprinting, pursuit and time trial.

Other exciting matches

For sports fans who can’t get enough, there will be plenty of other exciting games to watch in the afternoon, including the women’s volleyball final between the United States and Italy and the men’s handball final between Germany and Denmark. In water polo, Serbia and Croatia will battle for gold at 2 p.m., and the U.S. women’s basketball team will once again face France at 3:30 p.m.

The closing ceremony began at 8:55 p.m.
