President His Excellency Ratu William Maiwali Likatonivere commended the Junior Kulas team for their achievement and expressed his deep gratitude to the coaches, management and young athletes for their efforts.
“This is indeed a remarkable achievement as it is the first time that the Fijian women’s football team has competed at such a high level in a FIFA World Championship in Colombia and it is indeed a commendable effort,” the Head of State said while addressing the players ahead of their farewell match at the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup in Colombia.
Fiji, known for its rugby excellence, has now attracted worldwide attention for its achievements in football, with the President stressing that the country has been “excelling” on the international stage, especially in sports.
President Katoniwere highlighted Fiji’s outstanding achievements in tournaments such as rugby sevens and made it clear that the achievements of the women’s football team would open an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.
Still, he recognises the challenges facing the team, including limited funding, infrastructure and facilities.
Chairman Catoniville commended the coaches and management for their tireless efforts in preparing the team mentally and physically.
“What you do is unique,” he commented, expressing gratitude and admiration for their dedication.
He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by the players and their families, while also recognizing the important role of the team’s head coach Naziah Ali Krishna, wife of Fijian football captain Roy Krishna, from Labasa and a respected figure in Fijian football circles.
The President said her involvement reflected the team’s deep-rooted passion and commitment.
President Katoniville assured the team of the continued support of the State House, the Government and the nation.
“We will continue to support and pray for the team and management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who will be representing Fiji,” he said.
Junior Kulas will compete in Group B against France, Canada and Brazil.
The tournament is a significant milestone for Fiji, highlighting the growth and development of women’s football in the country and will inspire the next generation of players and unite the country behind its football team on the world stage.
The team coached by Angelica Tsai will play Brazil on August 31 at 6 pm, then Canada on September 3 at 8 pm and France on September 6 at 5 pm.
