The Hawke’s Bay Magpies’ bench proved too much for North Harbour as the black and white side stormed Albany in the final minutes of the NPC opener.

Considering the place last season’s finalist had booked so early, the Magpies’ 41-32 win was extremely satisfying.

The upset came early in the first half when Harbor led 12-0, and despite the opponent’s constant attacks and counterattacks, they were unable to extend their lead until the end of the game.

Led by All Blacks hopeful Sean Stevenson, Harbour’s powerful back three hammered opponents on the counter-attack in the first 60 minutes, scoring five goals – most of them strikingly from long range – in a model of fast and open Sunday afternoon rugby.

But when hope faded, the Magpies’ depth and fitness came to the fore.
