Samoa Rugby team to skip November fixtures due to financial situation
Last month, the Samoa Rugby Association wrote to the World Rugby Board announcing that the Samoa Independent Rugby Team would no longer participate in the World Rugby Championship scheduled for the end of this year.
Samoa Rugby Association president Tuila’epa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi said the national team’s withdrawal from the November tournament was due to their fourth-place finish, helped by a budget deficit due to a lack of “sponsors” to create and ensure such adoption.
In his submission to World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont, Tuilaepa suggested a number of ways World Rugby could help Samoa, including increasing grant funding.
However, a World Rugby spokesman responded that the financial problems arose because of decisions made by the league.
The spokesman revealed the amount of money allocated annually by World Rugby to Samoan rugby.
France chooses who can enter New Caledonia
France is considering whether it could visit New Caledonia, but has not yet done so, or will do so after the Pacific Islands Forum, which takes place in Tonga at the end of this month.
The leaders of Papua New Guinea have sent a request to French President Emmanuel Macron to visit Noumea, but without reporting, as all parties are affected by the current crisis in Papua New Guinea.
Last Monday, the new PIF chairman, Tonga’s Prime Minister, confirmed to Hu’akavameiliku George Sovaleni that he was still waiting for a response from France. But he also expressed the importance of the PIF leader visiting New Caledonia before the PIF meeting.
However, French Ambassador to the Pacific Veronique Roger-Lacan announced that the decision in this case lies with the French government, as New Caledonia is a territory under French supervision.
The fighting and combat in Noumea has been going on for nearly three months, when additional changes were made to the French constitution which could affect elections in New Caledonia and, there is a view, could affect Kanak locals.
Ten (10) persons died in these incidents and some have reportedly left the country.
