According to prison guards, in the current national situation and after the fall of the Awami League government, several reforms are needed to improve the security system in prisons. Without these reforms, the security of the prisons cannot be guaranteed. Moreover, the morale of the prison guards cannot be raised.
The prison guards’ demands are:
1. The highest promotion from prison guard to sergeant first class.
2. Grant 60 days of leave.
3. Allow employees to form associations.
4. Lifetime rations.
5. Fresh Money
6. Days spent on business trips or taking leave are not considered as personal leave.
7. Use of weapons is allowed outside the prison area. For example – courts, hospitals, transfer of prisoners, etc.
8. Kara Canteen dividends are distributed to all employees.
9. Provide simple/printed uniforms.
10. Increase in manpower.
11. Give flour instead of wheat.
12. Build a smart army.
13.Modern residence.
14. Prison guards should have their own prison hospital.
15. It will have its own IG jail.
It is noteworthy that protesters attacked the Narsingdi District Jail on the afternoon of July 19. After the prison was vandalized and set on fire, weapons were looted from the armoury. The entire prison was left unprotected. 826 accused escaped from the jail at that time. Also in the campaign to overthrow the government, multiple prisons were attacked and many prisoners escaped.
