An Israeli airstrike on a school building housing displaced people in Gaza City has killed more than 70 people, the director of a hospital told the BBC.

Fadel Naim, director of Al-Ahli Hospital, where many of the injured were taken, said the victims had now been identified, while the bodies of many others were so badly disfigured that they were difficult to identify.

An Israeli military spokesman said the Tabaine school “is an active military facility of Hamas and Islamic Jihad”, something Hamas denies.

The attack was criticized by Western countries as well as regional states, who said it showed Israel had no intention of reaching a ceasefire or ending the Gaza war.

In recent weeks, Israel has attacked several such shelters in the Gaza Strip.

According to the United Nations, as of July 6, 477 of Gaza’s 564 school buildings had been directly attacked or damaged, and more than a dozen schools have since been targeted.

Taba’in School, which houses more than 1,000 people, recently received dozens of displaced people from the town of Beit Hanoun after the Israeli army ordered them to leave their homes.
