Tourists and locals alike enjoy the variety of dishes on offer at the different vendors at Cuenca’s 10 de Agosto market, which celebrates its 70th anniversary during this festival commemorating the first sound of independence.
The center opened in 1954.
It was this variety that earned the “Gastronomic Market” certification from the Ministry of Tourism on August 7. It is the second market in the country to receive this distinction, after the 24 de Mayo market in Otavalo last May.

On the morning of Saturday, August 10, Cuenca Mayor Christian Zamora stressed the strategy of turning it into a gastronomic and tourist focal point during a ceremony marking the anniversary of the market.
He also welcomed tourists from other provinces, such as Guayas and El Oro, which often visit Cuenca during the holiday season.
“Keep coming, keep enjoying,” Zamora said. “Here you will find the affection of our people,” the city representative continued.
There are more than 600 merchants in the market. In addition to the intervention of the mayor and representatives of the merchants’ union, there are also musical performances.
Guayaquileños are the largest group of domestic tourists in Cuenca. According to the Cuenca Municipal Tourism Foundation, 37.5% of Ecuadorian tourists come from the main port.
The committee estimates that a total of 920,000 people will visit the city in 2023.
Although tourism in Cuenca has yet to reach pre-pandemic levels, the Azuaí Hotel Association still expects hotel occupancy rates in the capital of Azuaí to reach 95% over the weekend.
