In a year of crushing defeats for internationalists in Britain and abroad, there is finally some relief. The Liberal Democrats used yesterday’s by-election in Richmond Park as an opportunity for voters to voice their scepticism about Brexit. The strategy worked: Sarah Olney won the south-west London seat by 30.4 percentage points. Zac Goldsmith, a languid, aristocratic Brexiteer who led the vote with a dog-whistle campaign in the London mayoral race in May and quit the Conservatives in October in protest at plans for a third runway at nearby Heathrow, helped to sway him to the edge. By glossing over the issue (which the Green Liberal Democrats also oppose) and making the choice about Europe, his opponents have left him without a leg to stand on.
