CHarles F. Bloom’s ‘A’ team swept all opponents to win the 2024 Barbados Inter-School Primary Schools Chess Championship held at the Wildey Sports Stadium earlier this week in a landslide victory.
Charles F Broome A team finished with a perfect 25 points, 7 points ahead of second placed St Giles A team, while Charles F Broome’s B team finished third with 15 points, having defeated St Giles B team, Beyond the Box Education and Sharon Primary team in the play-offs.
The competition lasted for two days and adopted a five-round competition system. A total of 20 teams from more than a dozen primary schools participated.
The winning team consisted of Chaz Reifer-Belle, Nathan Simmons-Patterson, Janiyah Browne, Darren Toppin and Nathan Culpepper, with Kymani Gayle as an alternate.
The Charles F Broome ‘A’ team entered the competition as favourites to win the title, with several age group champions or national representatives in Reifer-Belle, Browne and Gayle. However, the overall victory was down to coach Corie Elcock.
The top five members of the team each received their respective board awards.
Only two St. George C players, Shakeem Applewaithe and Joash Sealy, also won all their matches.
St Giles A team, made up of Nyall Bushell, Aaron Tash, Kyi chai Straughan, Callum Foster and Donte Christian, finished a remarkable second place. They won four of their five games, losing just one to the eventual winners. Tash, Straughan and Foster all won special prizes on their respective boards, meaning they received more than 67% of the maximum possible score.
The Charles F Broome ‘B’ team of Amelia Mottley, Nia Clarke, Daisha Rose-Parris, Liam Byer, Arielle Gittens and Akeli Grazette brought further glory to the school by taking third place.
This was the restart of the primary school inter-school team tournament after the COVID-19 pandemic and Barbados Chess Federation (BCF) President Allan Herbrt said he was delighted to see over 100 students taking part in the tournament.
