Eight Lithuanian and one Belarusian artists were invited by the parish priest of Krekenava, Upit and Vadaktlia, Gedimins Jankunas, to participate in the third open-air exhibition of artists this year, and as they themselves joked, they depicted Krekenava and Upitlia.
In the third summer, a group of artists gathered in Krekenau for a week.
This year, artists from Vilnius, Kaunas and Druskininkai, as well as guests from the Belarusian city of Nesvizios, flocked to the town.
As the outdoor event’s initiator Rev. G. Jankūnas joked, the creative artists were invited for a rather pragmatic purpose – they left their work behind when they left.
The works from previous years were donated to the parish of Créconnais, where they still adorn the walls of the parish house.
The work created this year has been given to Upyte.
Exceptionally simple
Violeta Židonyta, outdoor curator and head of the watercolor department of the Lithuanian Artists Union in Kaunas, was struck by the idea of the learned priest G. Jankūnas that artists reveal the mysteries of God through creative and meaningful images.
“Both in Krekenava and Upit, you can feel a special atmosphere that really inspires creativity,” assures V. Židonytė. She says the sacredness of the environment is also undoubtedly reflected in the works of outdoor participants, which will be felt by those who see the works donated to Upytei.
“We also received a great grace – the consecration indulgence of the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary was celebrated outdoors, in the Cathedral of Krekenava (in other words – Sneginje). The Mass during the indulgences was celebrated by Bishop Linas Vodopjanovas. It was a great honor for me, because during them the bishop wore a silk religious robe arnold, on which I painted flowers a year ago, and then added religious symbols”, V. Židonytė rejoices.
The artist created an impressive anota with grass images for the Solinne festival, but it is also suitable for the celebration of Snekinne indulgences.
According to V. Židonytė, Upytė impressed outdoor participants with its extraordinary simplicity.
She particularly liked the town’s simple wooden church. Interestingly, as the artists painted in the town’s space, children who arrived on bicycles watched the process, as the artists said they were proud to have such an open-air exhibition in their Upyte.
V. Židonytė estimates that she created about ten works outdoors.
She drew many impressions from it and will incorporate them into other works during her time in Kaunas.

Caught the light
Genutė and Virginijus Sutkai came to this outdoor from Druskininkai. The artists said that they were impressed by the surroundings of the Krekennawa Cathedral and the impressive Upit Basilica.
“I tried to capture and capture how Upytė Church is lit by sunlight from outside, and how the light coming through the windows radiates from inside the church,” says G. Sutkienė.
V. Sutkus said that he noticed how different and unique the shrines in Krekenava and Upytė were.
The couple was also impressed by the wide valleys of Nevežys, and the area’s unique topography inspired their creativity.
“Both of us are art teachers and don’t have much time to be creative. Therefore, having the opportunity to create outdoors and interact with colleagues has increased our professional awareness,” says V. Sutkus.

He drew attention to the church
Painter Marija Mara, who came to the outdoor scene from the Belarusian city of Nesvizios, said she felt the cultural heritage of Krekenava and Upit was particularly valued and drew attention to the perfectly arranged churches in both towns.
The Belarusian artist works in pastel technique, the same one created by the famous Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.
“In my opinion, pastel is not very popular in Lithuania, but I want to emphasize that it is a very rich technique,” says M. Mara.

It’s tempting to come back
Kaunas artist Valentina Varnas claims that the incredibly peaceful atmosphere of Krekenava and Upit surrounds him and encourages him to create.
“I don’t want to leave here. After I leave, I want to come back again and again.” The developer admitted.
The organizer of the outdoor activities, V. Židonytė, introduced her to her study partner, V. Varnas, an artist who painted from nature in winter and summer.
He himself said that he had been the father of the Nemunas many times, and now he was attracted by the view of the Nevezhskaya River in the open air.
The exhibition of works by V. Varna and M. Mara “Garden of Reflection” is still taking place in Krekenava. The exhibition will delight the guests of the Soline Indulgence.

The Muse Visits Upyte
Kaunas artist Egle Petraityta-Talaliene admits that she was impressed by the fact that Myronis himself was a priest in Krekenava. She was inspired by the melancholy and dark Nevetsis sung by the priest-poet.
“In fact, I think Myronis was the one who served as the rector of the seminary for priests in this city from us, Kaunas. So it was great to find traces of this priest in Krekenava,” said the artist.
When she visited Upit, she was attracted not only by the wooden churches, but also by the Upit Traditional Crafts Center, where excellent national ribbons are woven. Therefore, the artist immortalized them in her work.
Artist Marija Rastenienė, also from Kaunas, was particularly interested in the auditorium bathed in light coming in from the windows of Upytė Church. The painting depicting her was donated to the Upytė Parish and will be exhibited in the parish hall.
Vilnius artist Saulė Urbanavičiūtė also praised Upyta.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to paint Upit, whose churches sparkle from a distance and whose subtle colours catch the eye of passers-by,” the artist said.
