7 August 2024 – Australian Embassy staff travelled to Ngerchelong in the north and continued south to Meyuns to share the Yiwarra Kuju: Canning Stock Route exhibition with primary school students.
Iwarakuju ‘The Road’ is the world’s longest cattle grazing route, located in Western Australia. The exhibition focuses on the many Aboriginal tribes directly affected by the development of the road, and depicts their stories through art.
The tour visited primary schools in Babeldoab in the first week and continued to Koror in week 2. The students toured the exhibition, viewed different artworks and heard stories from Aboriginal artists who lived in the area during the Canning Stock Road period (1905-1959).
Students shared their stories by entering an artwork competition, which asked students to draw their own route or journey through life. After the exhibition, the artwork will be collected by the schools and pieced together to show each school’s unique story.
The school with the most unique story will receive art supplies from the Australian Embassy, and the winning school will be announced soon.
Ms. Tegan Long, a proud Arawa First Nations woman who is assisting the Embassy in showcasing Iwala Kuju through schools, commented, “It was wonderful to see the students so engaged in the exhibition and to hear them tell their own stories in their artwork.”
The traveling exhibition will continue this week, with the final exhibition taking place at Meyuns Primary School this Friday.
