The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has commended the Vice President of Malawi, Dr Michael Usi, for his move to conduct surprise visits to various ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

In an exclusive interview, Gift Trapence, Chairman, Human Resources Development Committee, said the surprise visits by MDAs helped in timely discharge of duties.
Trapens said more such MDA surprise visits are needed as they encourage hard work, thereby increasing productivity.
“These visits have been helpful in encouraging a culture of timely reporting in work. But we need to have more structured engagement with the MDAs to ensure that the Vice President follows up on the implementation of the recommendations. There is also a need to focus on the implementation of the reform agenda to ensure that the MDA’s involvement is streamlined within the ambit of the reform agenda,” he said.
He said the visit enhanced the relationship between Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and the people and brought many positive impacts on the productivity and economic growth of the country.
Another radical human rights advocate and social commentator, Undule Mwakasungula, agreed with the HRDC chairman, saying
This inspection demonstrates the Vice President’s commitment to ensuring the Missile Defense Agency operates effectively and efficiently. This provides oversight and accountability.
He said that during his engagement with MDA officials and staff, the Vice President identified bottlenecks and challenges that hamper productivity and economic growth and therefore needed to be improved.
Mwakasungula said these visits motivate MDA staff to work harder because they know they have the attention and support from the top.
“The Vice President’s visit helps ensure that the activities of departments are aligned with the policies and priorities of the government. But it is important that the visit has clear objectives because without them, the visit may be seen as a mere ritual that does not produce tangible results,” he said.
He said there was a need to establish a follow-up mechanism to monitor and evaluate the impact of the visits and ensure accountability and continuous improvement of the MDA.
