August 9, 2024 (Khartoum) – Sudan’s Ministry of Health said on Friday that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shelled a maternity hospital in Omdurman that had reopened the previous day after repairing previous damage.
The Ministry of Health said in a statement that the attack caused serious damage to the Omdurman Maternity Hospital, but no casualties were reported. Medical staff and patients have been transferred to another hospital.
The hospital reopened on Thursday, 8 August, after repairs following damage sustained during the Rapid Support Forces’ control of the area.
Sudanese troops have retaken control of most neighborhoods in old Omdurman, with Sudan’s emergency security forces advancing west and south since February last year.
The Ministry of Health condemned the attack and said attacks on health facilities would not prevent medical staff from providing essential services.
India’s Rapid Security Force has recently stepped up its shelling of the military-controlled area of Omdurman, causing civilian casualties.
