This week’s “Läks aga läände” explores where the beauty winds of the 90s were blowing. Peep Pree opened the first plastic surgery clinic in Estonia, and he recalls the courage it took to open the clinic and how his first patient was a man.

In the 1990s, the word “plastic surgery”, which has become very common and everyday today, secretly appeared in Estonian life as a new term. Peep Pree, a surgeon who still successfully practices today, was one of the pioneers in this field.

Pree’s husband was a distinguished beautician in the sense of the time and also competed successfully. “They always talked about work at home and I was a general surgeon in the university clinic. I taught young students surgical anatomy, techniques for various surgeries, and probably the idea came to me after such conversations at home,” Pree recalled how he found the way to focus on cosmetic surgery.

“There was no independent cosmetic or plastic surgery in Tartu. Then I came up with the idea, which I also told the manager of the university clinic about, that I could use my free time to study, supplement, so that I could also perform. When I returned to Tartu after spending some time in Tallinn and studying in Finland and the US, the situation became so difficult that it was impossible to operate on patients related to cosmetic surgery. The university clinic was already in a difficult situation at that time, beds had to be reserved in the war situation, and because the specialty became so popular and efforts were made, it seemed what the purpose of this clinic was at that time,” recalls Prey, who was not deterred by the lack of precedents.

“I had the experience of setting up a cooperative with my brothers, selling cabbages on the market in Leningrad. So what kind of business was this? You didn’t plow the fields, you didn’t sow seeds, you just harvested. That’s how the idea came about. But looking back now, it was a crazy plan,” Prey admitted, terrified by the prospect of losing his regular salary.

“But when you are so fierce and so young, you are not afraid of anything. And you have such a fierce partner, like my husband Endra, who is first of all, of course, also a good friend, colleague and colleague.” – The founder of the clinic, Dr. Ragnar Heido, is an outstanding oncologist, but also knows the interest of the people and is the one who brought liposuction here, or liposuction, which is now used in all plastic surgery clinics,” said Pree.

Pree’s first clinic was located in a kindergarten. The first procedure Pree performed in private practice was a lower eyelid blepharoplasty. “I was married to a woman so I really believed in women, but they say if you do business and the first buyer of the day is a man then it must bring good luck. At least that’s what they say at the meetings. Cabbage market, my first patient was a man,” Pree recalls.

According to Pree, surgery around the eyes and eyelids was and is one of the clinic’s main focuses. “Even the best and most expensive creams have not yet evolved to the point where they can topple the surgeon from his perch. It may not be so high anymore, as there are a wide variety of preparations that help slow down and delay the ageing process,” he admits.

By the 1990s, the breast surgery boom was finding its place worldwide as well. “In 1991, with my modest help, Dr. Raie performed the first silicone breast implant surgery. The boom is still going strong. Of course, in the first few years, the number of patients could not compare to, for example, the number of breast surgeries performed by my Finnish colleagues per month or year, but let’s say by the early 2000s, I was performing more breast surgeries per month than my Finnish colleagues,” says Pree.

Pree points out that for middle-aged people, especially those who are a little younger, it is absolutely incomprehensible why no one talked about the fact that you had plastic tits in the 90s. “Most requests were for bigger breasts, but in a way that no one could understand. Even men couldn’t understand it. Then I usually say, it’s not worth keeping such a stupid man. Who doesn’t understand,” Pree said with a smile.

“Today, no one is ashamed to show the whole society a result that is completely terrible in my eyes, but beautiful in one person’s eyes. However, in order to make money on OnlyFans or TikTok. People have changed a lot. ” ,” said Prey.
