The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has reported significant financial success in the first round of the 2024 TNM Super League, with total gate receipts reaching K689,298,100, close to K700 million.


SULOM said in a statement today (August 8) that this represents an impressive increase of 37% when compared to the total revenue of K503,351,989 in the same period last season.
“The clubs received a total of K286,391,850, a significant increase from last season’s K195,617,351,” the statement said, adding that the teams with the highest gate receipts included defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets (K66,472,342), Mighty Wanderers (K55,025,265), Silver Strikers (K35,925,005) and Dedza Dynamos (K17,355,510).
“It is noteworthy that Silver Strikers Football Club recorded a significant increase in gate receipts of 76% to K20,429,808 compared to the same period last season.”
According to the SULOM report, the federation had to pay a total of K149,734,014 in match day expenses, of which the venue owners received K134,808,048 and the Malawi National Sports Council received K26,884,686.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) received K37,662,458 and SULOM itself received K53,817,043 which was used to cover administrative expenses. In addition to gate receipts, SULOM also received K86,850,000 from media rights for the first round of the season.
“The economic growth demonstrated by the 2024 TNM Premier League highlights the growing popularity and commercial success of football in Malawi, setting a promising precedent for the future of the sport in the country,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, after a week’s break, the second round of matches will kick off this weekend with leaders Silver Strikers taking on Karonga United at Karonga Stadium on Saturday.
Silver leads the standings with 37 points, nine points ahead of second-placed Mighty Wanderers (28 points) and 12 points ahead of third-placed Mzuzu City Hammers (25 points).
In fourth place are the defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets with 23 points, sharing points with Kamuzu Barracks in fifth place, but the two teams have different goal difference, Big Bullets have scored 18 goals while Kamuzu Barracks have scored 9 goals, while the military has scored 20 goals and conceded 18 goals.
On Saturday, Mighty Wanderers will host Mzuzu City Hammers at Kamuzu Stadium, while the team’s other matches include Civil Service United (9th) versus Chitipa United (14th) at Civo Stadium; Bangwe All Stars (15th) versus Dedza Dynamos (10th) at Balaka Stadium, and Creck Sporting Club (6th) versus Baka City (16th) at Aubrey Dimba Stadium – both making their first appearance in the top flight.
On Sunday, FOMO FC (13th) will host MAFCO FC (8th) at their home ground Mulanje Park, Kamuzu Barracks (5th) will take on Mighty Tigers (12th) at the Aubrey Dimba Stadium, while Moyale Barracks (7th) will travel all the way from Mzuzu to take on defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets (5th).
Meanwhile, at the end of the first round, the Silver Strikers had very interesting statistics – they were undefeated in 15 games, with 11 wins and 4 draws, 34 goals scored and 9 conceded.
The second place went to Mighty Wanderers and Kamuzu Barracks, who scored 20 goals each.
In the first round of last season, the Bankers finished second with 30 points and 8 wins, 6 draws and 1 loss. They have proven themselves to be one of the best defensive teams with a 100% home win rate.
Of the 37 points obtained, 24 were won at home and 13 were won away, with an away record of 3 wins and 4 draws.
