Kuwait City, August 10: The Ministry of Health has refuted the claims made in a circulated video regarding private pharmacies, stressing that the false information provided in the video could jeopardize the safety of medicines in the country.
The ministry assured the public of the quality and safety of all medicines in Kuwait, saying they adhere to drug safety standards approved by global health systems through the pharmacovigilance system.
It clarified that the total number of private pharmacies and their various branches in the country does not exceed 600, which is significantly lower than the 2,000 pharmacies mentioned in the video.
The Ministry of Health stressed that according to the Kuwaiti Law on the Regulation of the Pharmacy Industry, private pharmacy licenses are issued by the Ministry of Health to Kuwaiti pharmacists who have a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy and at least five years of experience in pharmaceutical services. These licenses are issued to individuals, not companies.
The Ministry of Health reiterated its commitment to enforcing the country’s laws and regulations and continued to monitor and inspect private pharmacies and all medical institutions. The Ministry of Health also monitors the abuse of licenses by individuals and companies and refers violators to the appropriate regulatory and legal authorities. Recently, this has led to the closure of six private medical institutions and the referral of seven doctors for investigation.
The Ministry of Health stressed that all medicines in Kuwait undergo a rigorous evaluation process before registration and distribution to ensure their effectiveness, quality and safety. This process includes the use of Common Technical Documents (CTD) to ensure compliance with international standards. Any medicine must be registered, tested in the Ministry of Health’s Drug Control Laboratory, and prove its quality, safety and stability, otherwise it will not be allowed to circulate in Kuwait.
In addition, the Ministry of Health pointed out that most of the medicines in Kuwait come from international manufacturers, and only 3% of registered medicines come from one of the Arab countries mentioned in the video. These medicines must pass a strict control system to ensure their quality and safety before they are allowed to be traded.
The Ministry of Health stressed that its administrative and technical procedures in drug control and other health fields are fair and put the health and safety of the country and citizens first. The Ministry also pointed out that it is taking all legal measures against the misleading video, including dealing with the false information contained in it, which may undermine people’s confidence in the country’s health system and the safety of medicines.
