Female candidates push for inclusive leadership and social welfare in Palau

Two female candidates, Ann Singh and Joann Lizon Talcon, have decided to run for public office in Palau, both with a strong commitment to social welfare, inclusion, and community improvement. Their platforms reflect a common vision: to achieve more equitable and responsive governance that takes into account the diverse needs of Palauan citizens.

Ann Singeo: Strengthening community foundations

Ann Singeo has a long history of public service and social welfare, and she hopes to strengthen the important foundations of Palauan society. Singeo’s experience working closely with small communities has given her a deep understanding of the importance of inclusivity in decision-making. She emphasizes that policies need to take into account all populations, including women, youth, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ people.

“We need someone to continue to care for and protect our homes and our way of life,” Singh said. “In order to be able to care for and develop our homes to meet our specific needs, we have to be inclusive in our decision-making and planning.”

Singao also highlighted the traditional role of women in Palau’s governance, noting that the current lack of female representation contradicts this tradition. She argued that comprehensive policies that address social and cultural well-being can only be achieved through gender-balanced leadership.

Joan Lisson Tarcon: Advocating for social and economic livelihoods

Another candidate, Joann Risong Tarkong, is committed to improving the social, health and economic lives of the people of Palau. Tarkong’s platform is built around key issues, such as combating the prevalence of illegal drugs, improving maternity and paternity leave policies, and addressing the high cost of living. She also advocates for better resources and opportunities for small businesses, especially those owned by women, people with disabilities, and retirees.

“I will push for ‘zero tolerance’ on illegal drugs and strengthen legislation and enforcement,” Tarcon said, outlining her top priorities in combating Palau’s drug-related challenges.

Tarcon also stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in leadership and pledged to work closely with other senators to ensure that the voices of all Palauans are heard and their needs are met through effective legislation.

Challenges facing women in politics

Both candidates acknowledged the unique challenges women face in Palauan politics. Singao noted that societal ideologies prevent women from seeking top decision-making positions, while Talcon stressed the need for better resources to support women running.

Despite these challenges, both Singh and Tarcon are committed to making a positive contribution to Palau’s future. Their election represents an important step toward more inclusive and responsive governance, informed by their deep understanding of the communities they serve.
