BEIJING: A “strong explosion” hit a container ship on Friday (Aug 9) at east China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, one of the world’s busiest ports.
The explosion has not caused any deaths or injuries.
The footage showed a fireball engulfing much of the deck and spewing debris into the air.
The explosion occurred at around 1:40 p.m. local time at the bow of the YM Mobility vessel, which was anchored at a port in Zhejiang province, Xinhua reported.
Taiwanese shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. confirmed that one of its cargo ships had caught fire.
The Ningbo Maritime Search and Rescue Center said the ship was docked at the port’s Beilun Terminal and was transporting dangerous goods.
The goods included lithium batteries and tert-butyl perbenzoate, a flammable and explosive organic compound that should not be stored in an environment above 30 degrees Celsius, CCTV said, citing preliminary findings from relevant departments.
Xinhua News Agency said that the cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
One video showed red fire trucks spraying streams of water on the charred vessel as black smoke billowed into the sky.
State broadcaster CCTV said the fire was put out by 5pm and the local coast guard had arrived at the scene to assist with the rescue.
According to CCTV, “After preliminary verification, all dock workers and ship crew members are safe, and there are no casualties.”
The massive Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is one of the world’s busiest ports in terms of cargo throughput.
