Marseille: Maximilian Medei won on Friday (August 9) Olympic bronze medal in the men’s kitesurfing event.

The Singaporean ended Singapore’s eight-year wait for an Olympic podium since swimmer Joseph Schooling won the gold in 2016.

At 17, Med also became Singapore’s youngest Olympic medalist.

“I hope everyone in the country is happy… Your support has been amazing. Happy birthday Singapore,” he told reporters.

Austria’s Valentin Bontus won gold, while first-round leader Toni Vodisek of Slovenia took silver.

Both entered the final with two wins in the third match. In the final, the players need to win three matches to win the gold medal – and the Austrian player reached the final first.
