Smashing a beer glass into someone’s ear is extremely dangerous, according to prosecutors. Today, a 42-year-old resident of The Hague went on trial for attempted manslaughter.

On the night of April 26-27, 2024, the man encountered a person in the city with whom he had been arguing for some time. He challenged the man, but despite the suspect’s comments, the man did not respond and continued on his own.

When they met again at a bar a few hours later, the victim again tried to ignore the suspect. But he suddenly hit the victim on the head with a beer glass from behind. More than twenty stitches were needed to close the two holes behind the victim’s ears. If the suspect had hit a little lower, it could have caused arterial bleeding.

The suspect initially held the glass in his left hand, but as the victim walked past him, he took the glass with his right hand and braced himself. “Like a pitcher at the start of a baseball game,” the prosecutor said. The force of the blow was at least as great: The glass shattered over the victim’s head.

The prosecution said everything indicated that the suspect deliberately intended to hit the victim with the glass. It is well known how fragile the head is, while glass can be sharp and therefore dangerous. Therefore, the suspect admitted that he would injure the victim in a life-threatening manner in the middle of a crowded bar.

The prosecution requested that the victim be sentenced to 40 months in prison for attempted manslaughter, including 10 months of conditional imprisonment. The court will make a ruling within two weeks.
