Today, August 9, 2024, the date on which I write this article, I was linked to a meeting through a virtual platform with the Dean of the School of Health Sciences of the Randiwala University System (and part of his team), ladies, and the Associate Academic Director and Academic Coordinator of Medical Careers at the San Pedro Claver Campus, SJ de la Verapaz. There were three main topics discussed, but one of them exceeded my expectations.
We knew that from that moment on, the process of international certification of the profession of physicians and surgeons on our campus had begun, and, of course, all the processes that followed. We who attended the conference declared ourselves to be almost in the standing room. Among other reasons, because we were even trying to realize the dream of our own university hospital (at the level of the entire system), which was currently becoming a reality.
To be honest, after hearing the news, I had a hard time connecting the following moments with the flashes of memories that I had from February 12, 1992 (the date of the first inaugural address at the then Verapaz Regional Headquarters) until the presentation.
The first words that come to my mind correspond to those of Fr Pedro Arrupe, SJ, 28th Superior of the Society of Jesus from 1965 to 1963: “I will not succumb to the fact that when I die the world will continue to exist” as if I were not “I will live”. 1 I heard this from Bishop Luis Manresa Formosa, then-President, who also told us (the first Director and her supporting committee) that “I hope that in no more than twenty years there will be a complete institution that will house “more urgent professions in the health sciences, providing concrete answers to the greatest needs of the people.”

Some unpleasant memories also came to the fore, such as the opposition faced by the then Dean’s Office, the management of the campus and regional headquarters, and ourselves, as well as by alarming Jesuits such as Carlos Rafael Cabarrus and Jorge Salzaneda. During that event, Father Carlos Cabarrus (an anthropologist) took the opportunity to speak to us about the human experience. I think you will be satisfied that science has contributed to dispelling this belief from the general consciousness. But it is too simplistic to ignore the ancient Christian belief in its existence. And the experience of evil – which you must have experienced many times in many ways – cannot be explained solely by the worldview that current science offers us. 2
We in the Verapaz team have experienced this horrible existence before the beginning of every new career we have in serving the people, but those who belong to the health sciences are very strong. From funny jokes to other types of symptoms, there is nothing pleasant. Our only purpose was and is for self-interest.
Today we can proudly say that for every ten doctors who graduated with us and took national and international exams to select for residency training, seven to eight young professionals entered (70/80%). I don’t know why these achievements, which make many happy, hurt a few (this is the dynamic of the evil spirit).
Without prejudice to the previous arguments, today we have over 3000 undergraduate students and over 300 students in graduate programs. All majors are of equal importance to us because they all respond to the mission of the campus and the demands placed on us by the region we serve.
I also brought my initial dream to the present. It was 1987, during a retreat for the clergy of the Diocese of Verapaz. The interlocutors were Bishop Luis Manresa y Formosa and Bishop Gerardo Flores Reyes of Verapaz. Bishop Flores told his former superior: “What do you think: should we bring a university to the diocese?” Don Luis Manresa responded: “Of course.”
Because I witnessed it firsthand, I am convinced that it is worth it and should be dreamed of (under the protection of good spirits).
