The 29th Ouagadougou Pan-African Film and Television Festival (FESPACO) will take place in Ouagadougou from February 22 to March 1, 2025, under the theme “African Cinema and Cultural Identity”. This information was provided by the General Delegate at a press conference on Thursday, August 8, 2024.

We are doing everything to make the 29th FESPACO one of the most successful fairs. We are taking small steps to achieve this goal. A few weeks before the end of the call for films, 349 films were received, including 8 Burkina Faso films. There are 57 feature films, 4 short films, 2 documentary shorts and a TV series. Directors have until September 30, 2024 to register their films. This number has increased slightly compared to the previous edition.

The international selection committee has been formed. Nine leading figures in the film industry, including Mohamed Saïd Ouma (Comoros Islands), Enoka Julien Ayemba (Cameroon), Hawa Essuman (Ghana), Farah Dramani (Niger). will have the task of selecting the films. The president of the 29th FESPACO feature film jury is the oldest director, Malian Souleymane Cissé. He has two gold standards to his credit. Kenyan Judy Kibingé presides over the documentary and short film jury. Certification has also been launched. So far, 33 nationals and 56 international citizens have registered. Registration is entirely online and ends on December 31, 2024.

Events related to FESPACO, namely Yenenga Workshops, the International African Film and Audiovisual Market (MICA) were also launched. For Alex Moussa Sawadogo, General Representative of FESPACO, MICA is not a shopping street. It is a space to do business and seek partnerships.

“It must be recognized that Burkina Faso has one of the A category festivals, where registration is free. This time, we paid a price and went the professional route. The total amount is about 33,000 CFA francs,” said the general delegate of FESPACO. He took the opportunity to ask those who already have a film ready not to wait until the last minute to register. “This has no influence on the selection of the film. Even if your film is not 100% ready, you must submit it. In any festival, you don’t wait until it is completely finished to get off. It must always be mentioned that this is a working copy,” he said.

Chad will listen to his speech to show solidarity and commitment with Burkina Faso. “We have a long cultural and political history. I was trained as a filmmaker. For us, coming to FESPACO is to complete a cinematic pilgrimage. I have participated in FESPACO for six consecutive sessions. Although we have not yet established the gold standard, we believe that we are on the right path. This is also where we come to show our culture. I am proud to be in Burkina Faso, which is also our land. Because even if the Burkinabés are from Chad, we are from Burkina Faso. History will remember this for the rest of our lives,” he testified.
