Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has rejected a request from Ukraine to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attends the inauguration of Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum.

“We can’t do this,” López Obrador said at a news conference on Thursday. “This has nothing to do with us.”

The Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico has called for the arrest of Putin as he traveled to Mexico City.

The embassy said in a statement on Wednesday that Kiev “trusts” the Mexican government will “comply” with the ICJ’s arrest warrant for Putin.

The Ukrainian embassy was referring to a March 1401 ruling by the International Criminal Court, which found Putin guilty of war crimes in Ukraine and ordered his arrest.

The inauguration of Claudia Shinbaum will take place on October 1. She is the first woman in the history of Mexico to hold the presidency.
