In the semi-finals of the Paris Olympic Water Polo Championship, the Australian women’s team eliminated the three-time Olympic champion American team 14:13 in a penalty shootout.
At the end of the first half, the United States led 5:2, but with the strong performance in the second and second halves, Australia pulled back and tied the game 8:8 in regular time. In the penalty shootout, Australia scored all six shots, while the United States missed the last shot.
In doing so, Australia prevented the United States from winning a fourth consecutive Olympic title, something no team has ever done in men’s or women’s water polo.
In the final, the Australian women’s football team will face the 2020 Tokyo Olympic vice-champions Spain, who also defeated the Netherlands 19-18 after a penalty shootout. Judit Folka scored five goals for Spain in regular time, and goalkeeper Martina Terry saved Brigitte Slijkin’s shot in the penalty shootout.

Spain has won six straight games at the World Cup in Paris and will be looking to win the title, having missed out twice after losing to the United States in the finals in London and Tokyo.
The title fight will take place at the Arena d’Affonse in Paris on August 10. /BTA
