Ferozeko (Pajhwok): Some orphans and child labourers in the western province of Ghor said they want to study and the caretaker administration should help them in this regard, while local officials said an education programme for such children has been initiated.
Abdul Saboor, 12, is an orphan who works from dawn to dusk as a shoemaker beside the dusty roads of the city of Ferozhko to provide food for his mother and sisters.
He told Pajhwok Afghanistan News that his father was a police officer in the previous government and was killed in the conflict seven years ago.
Saboor also goes to school but faces many difficulties as he has to work to support his family.
According to him, they (Saboor, his mother and two sisters) lived in a rented house and he often thought of giving up his studies.
“If the government helps my family, I can study with passion and peace of mind, otherwise I might drop out,” he added. He earns a maximum of 200 afghanis a day, but sometimes returns home empty-handed.
Meanwhile, 10-year-old Frieden, a resident of Ferozhko, picked up trash from the garbage dump with his 12-year-old sister.
He said: “After my father fell ill and died, our life became very bad. My mother went to other people’s houses to wash clothes every day. My sister and I went to the market together to collect paper, old iron or anything that could be sold.”
The child collects reusable items from garbage dumps in the city of Ferozhko and earns 50 to 100 Afghanis a day to buy bread.
Both the children requested the government to rescue them from this plight and provide them with a chance to get an education.
However, provincial governor’s spokesman Mawlawi Abdul Wahid Hamas told Pajhwok that they plan to take the orphans under their protection and provide them with education.
“There are currently 250 orphans here, 50 of whom are girls, currently attending the kindergarten of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.”
According to him, these children learn carpentry, welding and make handicrafts besides school subjects.
