Revenge cycle
Some of Israel’s leading newspapers ran front-page articles on Thursday citing “assessments” that Iran may be reconsidering its course of action, reportedly in part due to pressure from the United States.
Officials and leaders across the Middle East and beyond called for calm, with British International Development Secretary Anneliese Dodds telling AFP during a visit to Jordan: “We have to see a de-escalation.”
The United States has sent additional warships and warplanes to the region and urged Iran and Israel to avoid escalation.
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke on Wednesday with Iranian Foreign Minister Masoud Pezeshkian and later spoke to Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, asking both sides to “avoid a cycle of revenge,” the French presidency said.
Israeli military chief Herzig Halevy told troops “we will not stop” targeting the leaders of “our most dangerous enemies” and vowed to “find” and “attack” newly appointed Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, according to an Israeli military statement.
