One of the local labor unions of Samsung Electronics in South Korea launched a one-day strike today to fight for better benefits. This is the first strike activity in the company. Market analysts believe that this strike will not have a significant impact on the production of Samsung memory chips.
The National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), which initiated the strike, has about 28,000 members, accounting for more than one-fifth of the company’s total employees, and is the largest of the company’s five unions.
Market research firm TrendForce said that the strike involved more employees at the Seoul headquarters than those directly involved in production. The strike was only for one day, and after the public holiday on Thursday, some employees had already applied for leave today. The production process is highly automated, which means that it may not have a significant impact on production.
Samsung Electronics has said it will raise wages by 5.1 percent this year, but the union has demanded an extra day of annual leave and more transparency in performance bonuses. The company has previously said it would hold discussions with the union in good faith.
Samsung employees have sporadically demonstrated outside the company’s Seoul offices and chip production sites in Hwaseong in recent weeks. Last week, some Samsung unions said they would not join the action, skeptical of the intentions behind the planned strike.
