The Australian Racing Group, promoter of the TCR Australia Championship, is looking at several possibilities to revitalize its touring car racing, and one possibility Australians like is a visit to the Guia Circuit.
Amid the doubts that still linger over the future of the TCR category in Australia, two distinct possibilities have emerged, both of which could come to fruition as early as next year, according to Australian specialist portal speedcafe.com. One of the solutions on the table is for TCR Australia to accompany the ultra-popular Australian Supercars Championship at some races in 2025. The second possibility, and perhaps the strongest, involves forming a mini-Asian championship in partnership with TCR Asia-Pacific, with mutual evidence.
Australian Racing Group managing director Liam Curkpatrick revealed he has contacted TCR Asia organisers to see if there is interest in partnering up. “Whether they will come here to do some racing and/or whether TCR Australia will race there and whether there is the possibility of TCR Australia racing in Macau,” Curkpatrick was quoted by the Australian online publication as saying.
Although TCR Australia has had a tough time, with just 13 cars entering the last race in Queensland, the head of Oceania’s largest TCR championship is adamant the championship will not disappear and reiterated that the TCR category is still here and will remain important in world motorsport even after the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) ends at the end of the 2022 season.
“Unfortunately, the TCR World Tour has to be suspended this year. Throughout its seven decades of history, the Macau Grand Prix has always been a favourite of the “Aussies”, but despite numerous attempts, an Australian race has never made it to Macau. The Kumho FIA TCR World Tour will be part of the 71st Macau Grand Prix, with a dozen full-time “world” racers set to share the Guia start line with TCR China drivers. TCR Australia competitors will be able to win their dream ticket to Macau without having to add a race to their schedule, as they will be able to join this starting line as the technical regulations for the category are universal.
