Theresa May and her cabinet ministers have been vague over the past few months about the UK’s future relationship with the EU. Yes, she confirmed in her October conference speech that Brexit would be beyond the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice and the EU’s free movement regime. Some saw this as inconsistent with reports that the UK would seek special arrangements for parts of the economy (such as the City of London and car manufacturing) or May’s assurances to businesses that she would work to avoid a Brexit “cliff edge”. Many in other European countries question whether the UK will leave the EU.
