The Government of Guyana, in collaboration with international partners, has taken a groundbreaking initiative to lay the foundations for a revolution in its rice sector.
The recent “Precision Agriculture Practices Using Drone Technology Project to Help Smallholder Farmers in Guyana Improve Rice Production” marked an important milestone. This initiative not only marks the infusion of advanced technology into agriculture, but also highlights Guyana’s determination to transform its rice production landscape.

The introduction of drone technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to rice farming practices in Guyana is undoubtedly revolutionary. The program initially targeted Regions II, III, VI, and later Region V, demonstrating how technology can bridge the gap in traditional farming methods.

The project, funded by the FAO-China South-South Cooperation Programme with an investment of approximately US$165,000, aims to improve agricultural productivity through precision farming technologies.
Minister of Agriculture Zulfiqar Mustafa highlighted the transformative power of this technology in his keynote speech. The significant increase in rice yields – from 5.9 tons per hectare in 2019 to 6.6 tons per hectare in the first season of 2024 – is testament to the tangible impact of the program. “Equipped with advanced crop management drones and high-spec laptops, farmers can better optimize their operations and increase yields. These services are provided free of charge to farmers, further extending the impact of the project and ensuring that even small-scale producers can benefit from technological advances.”

Huang Rui, Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Guyana, stressed that the support of the People’s Republic of China was also crucial. This collaboration exemplifies the role of international cooperation in promoting sustainable agricultural practices. By demonstrating the potential of precision agriculture, the project contributes to Guyana’s broader goal of the Caribbean Community Food Systems Agenda to reduce food imports by 25% by 2025.
Additionally, the use of GIS technology is critical to addressing flood risk, a major issue facing rice farming in Guyana. The ability to record and analyze critical data will help estimate losses and improve flood risk management. This proactive approach will not only increase crop yields, but also promote broader environmental and economic sustainability.

The success of the pilot project bodes well for the future of rice farming in Guyana.
