Luxembourg has confirmed 39 cases of bluetongue in livestock and called for vaccination campaigns to prevent the disease from spreading further.
As of Thursday morning, the Department of Agriculture Confirmed in a press release A total of 39 animals on 28 farms in Luxembourg were infected with bluetongue disease (BTV), including 25 cattle, 13 sheep and 1 goat.
Luxembourg is preparing for an expected wave of infections due to the growing epidemic situation in neighboring countries, especially Belgium and Germany, and the possibility that warm weather will increase the spread of disease-carrying insects. In response, Luxembourg is carrying out a vaccination campaign.
The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) will receive a vaccine this week, which it has ordered in advance. Vaccinators will be notified as soon as the vaccine is available. Although vaccination of cattle is voluntary, it is highly recommended. The government will cover the cost of the vaccine, but animal owners will need to pay for the vaccination procedure.
ALVA also stressed the importance of reporting any suspected cases to a veterinarian. It is important to note that the virus cannot be transmitted to humans, even through consumption of meat or milk from infected animals.
Bluetongue is a non-infectious, insect-borne viral disease that affects ruminants such as sheep, cattle and goats. Symptoms include high fever, excessive salivation, and swelling of the face and tongue, with high morbidity and mortality.
